It is typical to walk into a Yoga class and see a wide variety of individuals holding their "down-dogs" and strengthening their "tree" poses. Yoga has become a mainstream physical exercise in our western world today. It is practiced in local gyms, private homes, yoga studios and even in nature alongside the ocean or in the mountains. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke". Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The practice and goal of yoga dates back to the Upanishads, written between 1000-5000 BC. Though most people are initially drawn to it for the physical benefits there are many positive reasons to practice. Yoga is literally the union of the mind, body and spirit.
